The obvious goal of all racing games is to go from the beginning to the end as fast as you can as fast as you can. The vast majority of races are held on tracks that are built to facilitate rapid time with all the obstacles from technical corners ranging from gentle curves to tight hairpins. The track conditions are a known quantity and drivers are locked to locate and lock the racing line.
Consistency is the key to win races. For track races with fixed terms, the goal of consistency is much greater than for off-road racing. There are many more variables to manage off-road racing and these variables start with the track.
In off-road racing, the courses offer real obstacles, artificial and natural. The goal to finish with the fastest time is still valid, but there is no real best racing line off-road race. Instead, the racing line moves because of the wear sections are not paved but are grass, dirt, mud, rocks — large and small, hills and valleys.
I want everything
Overpass comes with the features required of a runner: career mode, quick races, and multiplayer online modes — including the management of the shared screen. There is also a custom Challenge Mode where you can design your own calendar of events.
The inclusion of official licenses and Overpass to that manufacturers such as Yamaha, Suzuki and Tex tron is also important for racing sims fans. This includes a stable of twenty vehicles consisting of ATV and UTV.
There are forty technical tracks covering six environments, including mounted vertical hills. This is where the game really shines. The environments are rendered in stunning detail. The foliage grass and shrubs to trees is fantastic. Water, dirt and mud also look great and are thrown into the air by large tires studded vehicles. The vehicles get dirty, especially in the muddy sections.
The graphical fidelity extends to vehicles. They all look great, especially the suspension compresses and decompresses constantly in response to the ground. Multiple camera views are available but in reality, only the rearview of the vehicle's useful. The cockpit view, in particular, is useless because you really need to see where your tires from obstacles. The angle adjustment drive is essential to avoid the vehicle tipping, which causes a waste of time. Obstacle tires can be attacked directly, but the balls, pipes and rocks must be taken at an angle.
Sound is important in racing games, but it is neglected in Overpass. The engine sounds seem to be stuck on two settings; idle or full throttle. There is no gradation between the two, which converts the amount of gas to be applied in a game of guessing unnecessary.
Racing games live and die by their physique. Especially for those who aspire to simulations of the real world. Overpass boasts realistic physics, but in my first test session, I have not seen. Using my PS4 Dual shock on my PC seemed empty. Orders responded well, but there was no force feedback — and all those who have read my other reviews for racing games, you know my position on FFB for racing games. Watching my bike bounce and jump on rocks and logs, slipping through the mud and fight against the slopes without FFB was so empty. Using my joystick made the blank experiment. So much so that I would give Overpass a bare pass mark of 60.
Corn! Then I hung my Logitech G27 wheel FFB and voilà ! The game came to life. Not only I felt the course run, but all the bounces and jolts of my bike were communicated to me. What a difference! My level of immersion has increased tenfold. More importantly, the game became fun.
I ran a lot of games, but Overpass brings something new and unique kind of race. If you have an FFB wheel, try this game. Otherwise, only the off-road racing fanatics will find something here to keep them coming back.
