In Horizon Forbidden West for PS4 and PS5, Ally goes on an all crucial journey through the picturesque landscapes of the forbidden West of the former USA. Your task: She has to stop the spread of a devastating plague that threatens all life. She crashes her again in the fight against aggressive machines - many of them novel and even more dangerous than the monsters, with which the young hunter had to knock around during their adventure in Horizon Zero Dawn.
- More skills, more weapons, more possibilities in combat
- Weapons skills à la assassin's Creed Odyssey
- bloody fight against the slide catch
- Horizon meets Zelda Breath of the Wild
- Guerrilla's great promise of an unforgettable Open World
Not only does Ally have to face a tremendous challenge, but also guerrilla itself. Because the studio is facing the difficult task of consistently developing the fantastic first part and even exceeding it. And many things happen that this (machine) mammary task succeeds. We are even firmly convinced about our European-exclusive welcome session.
What did we play?
Gamer was able to play forbidden West for about 3.5 hours on the PS5 in buttery switch 60 FPS mode. Among other things, we have done the new Arena challenge and two longer main missions right at the beginning of the story. In this, Ally meets the preparations for your journey in the forbidden West and is therefore still in the well-known mountainous characteristics of the first part. So we could not see anything from the Pacific coast of California, but have collected many impressions about the new mechanics and some new machines. As an interview partner, Game Director Mathias de Jonge stood aside.
More skills, more weapons, more possibilities in combat
Horizon Forbidden West feels very familiar in the first game minutes. But immediately at our first encounter with a mechanical engineering, the continuation leads us immediately in mind how many new tricks Ally has in stock compared to the first part now. And that must be mandatory to be able to persuade the many new machines, because they also surprise us with their new skills.
Right at the beginning we meet an Acid Bristle back. A huge machine wild boar that threatens people who live in a small settlement on the border to forbidden West. The Bristle back storms freely quickly on us and could one with his tremendous metallic tusks immediately, we would not dodge with an elegant role. And not only that: The monster sprays a green poison cloud that uses us constant life energy when we walked through.
Of course, we could now shoot with our hunting arch on the wild beast until it goes to the ground someday, but that would be arrow waste! We are torn and equip our new poison arrows instead. With the toxic bullet we aim directly on the poison tank on the back of the wild boar and dissolve a chain reaction thanks to the reinforced poison effect. The tank exploded, the Bristle back loses almost its entire life energy, and the poison explosion also gives space damage, which also pulls enemies near the spoil.
A little later we can try one of Ally's many new weapons, namely the Spike Thrower . These are mighty throwing speed that ally hurls from the distance to enemies. Throwing Spear lasts a few seconds longer than the shelter of an arrow, but far more damage aligns, can even break out armor - and especially beautiful: Spike Thrower explode after a short delay. You can not imagine how satisfying it feels to drill a spear in the metal tank of a Bristle backs and to see its armor in the effect thunderstorm.
These weapons are also new among other things:
- A kind of metallic disc , the ally fires lightning fast in the finest captain America-manner on your opponents
- Smoke bombs , the enemies temporarily block the view and give us time
- Floating trainers in which we cans make in machines. Detonation advised the beasts into a stagger and their actions are interrupted
More love for the melee problem child
The dull, repetitive melee mechanics was one of the greatest criticisms in Horizon Zero Dawn, the Guerrilla in Forbidden West wants to void. On the skill tree, we can now unlock several melee capabilities (for example, severe attacks or shield crushers) as well as special combos, which designs the spear-clip to make varied and effective. During our session, however, we have not been able to try the brand-new Melee attacks, so we are curious.
Weapons skills à la assassin's Creed Odyssey
However, in order to be able to exist against the dangers of the forbidden West, Ally can not only rely on their versatile toys, but must also make use of their new skills. Similar to, for example, in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, it now applies specific skills: per weapon, it can run up to three individual moves that can be changed back and forth in the arms wheel.
The switch of the skills in the army wheel archive in the zeal of the battle as a little rickety and cumbersome, but we give the machines with our moves but at least neat acidic. For example, with our hunting arc, we can fire three arrows on our opponents at the push of a button and set extremely damage. Alternatively, we can release an arrow rain on our adversaries, so Ally aims up and leaves a dozen stories down their goal and can even catch several suddenly.
However, skills can not be applied as often as you like. We have to pay attention to Ally's yellow endurance strip, which automatically fills up with time.
bloody fight against the slide catch
A little later, Gameplay Director Mathias de Jonge shows us the arena. A completely new additional activity in which we deny areal battles on different ranks (amateur, advanced, professional, etc.) against all machines, which we encounter in the course of our adventure. And a sub-activity that uses us all the combative skills we have learned so far. Here we meet a gigantic machine snake alias slide catch, where the combat system of Forbidden West unfolds its full potential.
In order not to be crushed within a few seconds, we must combine our skills, weapons and elemental attacks.
So we freeze the snake with ice lines, so you can only move slowly, then heat her with our explosive throwing spears and let a three-sized shot at activated slow motion burst your toxin tank, so that you can not poison us anymore. Gradually, with a lot of weapons change and neck breaker evasive maneuvers, the slid catch goes with oh and noise to the ground. Especially managed.
You can also view the slide catch (and other machines) here in the trailer:
Forbidden West's combat system requires a lot of tactical sense, combination gathering and skill when targeting and dodging for larger, stronger machines. Clear, weaker monsters can be down with a handful of arrows. However, the amazing depth and complexity of the combat system automatically motivates us to really get us in and at the end of themselves to lure the smallest machine into a shock trap instead of turning them off the fast (and boring) way.
- Which machines are also there? Here you will find a list of all new machines in Horizon Forbidden West .
Horizon meets Zelda Breath of the Wild
But not only the fights play (still) more varied and more exciting than in Horizon Zero Dawn. Explore the game world and the locomotion make much more fun than before, including:
-
Shield wing (shielding) , with the ally similar to Zelda: Breath of the wild can slide to decrease case damage and other routes in the air (the range is not quite as big as in Both)
-
PLASTER , which allows ally to reverse walls to get hold of underlying treasures or unlock hidden ways
breathing mask with which our heroine can dive unlimited Undertaken, with which Ally can use fast to move to Grapple Points to move from a platform to the next, or to catapult at the push of a button in the air
You can also see the new gadgets in the gameplay trailer to play in action:
It is particularly spectacular when we dynamically chain several moves. That does not just look stylish, but is also helpful in fighting. For example, we catapult high in the air with the Undertaken on a Grapple Point and can now shoot with the sheet with activated slow motion on our enemies among us. Then we move our shield wing and slide elegantly to the ground where we give you the rest. All that is wonderfully easy, all moves go dynamically over each other and let us feel like a superhero.
Climbing has also decisively changed Guerrilla. On rock walls we find no striking yellow marked protrusions anymore, which show us the way. This time we climb from random crackers in rock walls, which we make visible with the Focus scanner.
Although we can not climb every rock wall as in Zelda Breath of the Wild, but in direct comparison to Horizon Zero Dawn but much more climbing freedom.
Beautiful world - that has been visually
Already Horizon Zero Dawn turned out to be a visual Open World miracle and even looks fantastic five years after the release. Forbidden West places a shovel on the PS5 and delights with more details in the area and at the characters. For example, we now see individual Marched in Ally's face , and NPCs also look much more detail than before.
In addition, the foresight on the PS5 was significantly increased. When we let our eyes wander and see banned mountains and ruins in the distance, that arouses an extreme adventure lust. We can not wait to explore the complete Open World and especially the Pacific Coast!

Guerrilla's great promise of an unforgettable Open World
From the Open World itself, we have seen only a fraction during our session. As Mathias de Jonge explains following us, the game world of Forbidden West falls a little bigger than the predecessor. In addition to the main story, there should also be more minor activities that keep us on trot several hundred hours of play when we want.
Of course, of course, it is not better, that's why Guerrilla wrote to the flag, removing another major criticism of Horizon Zero Dawn and to file the quality of the side quests. Tasks away from the edge of the road should now not only tell varying games, but also emotional, significant stories.
And if this project succeeds, Horizon Forbidden West could not only overrun its great predecessor, but thanks to the complex combat system and impressive new machines has the potential to become one of the best Open World games at all.
Release: Horizon Forbidden West appears on 18 February 2022 for PS4 and PS5.
