There has been a sharp increase in video games considered as a form of legitimate art in recent years, and Hollywood takes note of it. Apart from many video games being adapted, with varying levels of success (including those to come, like the Metal Gear Solid film that recently introduced Oscar Isaac in the role of Solid Snake), we begin to see Big-budget TVs based on games, like The Witcher, the rumor of the Silent Hill series and the next adaptation of The Last of Us.
Detention may not seem like the most likely addition to slate. Located in the middle of the white terror period (when Taiwan was under the martial law to repress political dissidents), the game is a horizontal scroll 2D horror adventure that sees the students Wei and Ray trapped in the high school distant from Greenwood with mysterious creatures known as lingering, and forced to discover the bloody story of the school to survive. The game made waves for its combination of psychological horror at the Silent Hill and the very real terror of living in a police state.
Detention has already received a cinematographic adaptation, but the new series — which takes place in the 90s — does things a little differently. Located in the 90s, he sees a new heroine Running entering a forbidden wing of the Greenwood High School where she meets the ghost of a student who leads her to reveal the dark history of the school — including the events of the game — While the story begins to repeat itself.
The series began to be broadcast yesterday on Netflix, each of the eight-hour Upsides being published each week, to coincide with their diffusion on the Taiwanese chain PTS. Time will tell us if the series will be considered another video game flop or will become an adaptation of rare video game and well considered, but if the trailer has something to pass, we will have a scary moment.
